Council leaders have paid tribute to Sir Alan Duncan after he announced he would be standing down as MP for Rutland and Melton, describing him as "one of the most dedicated public servants that this country has had."

Rutland County Council's Chairman, Kenneth Bool, and Leader Oliver Hemsley, have both praised his work and time in office.

Councillor Bool said: "Sir Alan has been a dedicated MP for more than 27 years. During this time he has helped thousands of Rutland's constituents and represented their views and concerns in Parliament.

"His steadfast commitment has not only earned him the respect of the residents he has quietly helped, but a place at Her Majesty's Most Honourable Privy Council in 2010 and he was made Knight of the Realm in 2014.

"In an ever changing political world, Sir Alan was without doubt the most knowledgeable member of government in respect of Middle East affairs.

"I would like to convey my gratitude to Sir Alan for all he has done for Rutland and wish him well for the future."

Oliver Hemsley added: "Sir Alan has made an immeasurable contribution to British Politics over almost three decades.

"His work at constituency level, nationally and internationally sets him apart as one of the most dedicated public servants that this country has had.

"Speaking personally, he has been a tremendous supporter of Rutland, ensuring that our views and interests are represented in Westminster."
