Update after human ashes dropped in Oakham park
By Seth Walton - Local Democracy Reporter 12th Aug 2026
Police have provided clarification regarding an incident in which human ashes were dropped in a town park.
A spokesperson for Leicestershire Police said a heavily intoxicated man fell from his mobility scooter on Thursday (August 6) while attempting to scatter his wife's ashes in Cutts Close park in Oakham.
After dropping the ashes on a pathway, the individual was "goaded" by nearby parkgoers.
However, according to the spokesperson, no assault took place nor was any crime reported to the police, as has been suggested elsewhere.
The intoxicated individual was later attended to by paramedics.
Oakham town mayor Martin Brookes said he became aware of the incident the following day, after receiving reports that remnants of the ashes still lay strewn across the pathway.
In a blog post written on his own website, Cllr Brookes said he attempted to contact a grounds maintenance team to clear up the spillage, but after failing to contact the relevant crew, he cleared some of the ashes up himself using water.
Cllr Brookes is appealing to anyone who knows the individual to assist the mayor in identifying him.
