An Uppingham schoolboy has been commended for his quick thinking and community spirit after suspecting a burglary was taking place at a relative's business in the town.

Alfie Marston was tonight (Weds) presented with a certificate of recognition for his actions from Leicestershire Police's Inspector Siobhán Gorman, Eastern Counties Neighbourhood Policing Commander.

Alfie had been out on his scooter with a friend, when he feared a crime might be taking place and flagged down PC Joe Lloyd, beat officer for Oakham and Barleythorpe.

PC Lloyd, who presented Alfie with the certificate on Insp Gorman's behalf, told Oakham Nub News: "Alfie pulled me over a few weeks ago in Uppingham.

"He was concerned as a shop where his relative worked in North Street East had its lights on and the garage at the side of the building was open.

"He had called his relative and was worried that there might have been a burglary.

"I checked and the premises were secure from the outside and a key holder came and checked inside.

"Although there was no crime, Alfie was actively trying to do something good and I thought he should be recognised."

The certificate awarded by Inspector Siobhán Gorman, Eastern Counties Neighbourhood Policing Commander covering Rutland, Harborough and Melton reads: "Alfie Marston is recognised for his diligence and efforts to ensure that a local business was protected when he thought it was at risk from burglars. Thank you for your actions."
