Uppingham service station plan facing public opposition.

By The Editor 11th Mar 2021

Rutland residents are opposing a planned service station at Uppingham.

Recharge Roadside Services want to develop a 2.7acre site north of the A47 at Duddington way, to create a petrol filling station with eight pumps, an ancillary convenience store, plus by a drive-thru coffee shop.

There would also be four electric vehicle charging points, and parking for 40 vehicles.

The scheme promises 15-20 jobs.

The application to Rutland County Council commented: "Current roadside facilities on the A47 are deficient in terms of their customer service offer, range of provision, opening hours and are absent of electric vehicles charging facilities and hydrogen provision.

"The scheme is well designed and sensitive to its rural location. The proposed access arrangements are suitable, and the development can be delivered without any significant harm to matters such as landscape, ecology, archaeological, drainage or trees or hedgerows."

he siting of this service station is in a very dangerous position regarding road safety.

However, comments received on the Rutland Council website reveal much public opposition, with dozens of comments already listed.

Among them, people say there is no need for such a facility, citing others nearby, the development would use virgin farmland in open countryside, and the development would be sited at a busy junction, with a complicated and busy roundabout.

Rutland County Council has yet to dtermine the application.
