Last Sunday, the Greetham Valley Golf Club Gents played the Tudor Springs 4somes competition, the winners of which are then qualified to enter the national Daily Mail Foursomes competition.
In the competition the overall winners were Mark Mousley and Dave Morgan with a nett score of 70.5, just ahead of Steve Roche and Chris Proudman who scored 71.0 whilst Chris Hatch and Peter Maksymiw ended up in third place, also on 71.0 but losing out on countback.
Mark and Dave were lying in second place until the very last hole when a birdie on the 18th meant that they leapfrogged into first place.
On the same day the Ladies played their Peugeot Coronation 4somes Qualifier and in this case there was a win for Ellie and Izzy Haughton when they scored 40 points to beat Helen Woolley and Sue Brand by just one point. Third place was taken by Pat Jamieson and Jackie Friend with 37.
On Wednesday the Ladies played a Wrong Card Stableford which ended up with Lesley Storey in third spot with 32 points, second was Sue Brand also with 32 points but the overall winner was Sue Clegg with 34 points.
Also on Wednesday the Ladies played a friendly match at home against Thorney Lakes and Liz Haughton, Joyce Squires, Chris Edwards, Bev Dolman, Eileen Pare, Jill Cannings, Valda Austin and Sandy Begy played fabulously to win 3-1.
On the Friday the Handicap League team played away at Belton Park in horrendous weather conditions. The team of Liz and Ellie Haughton, Kay Ropson, Dee Ginnity, Sue Brand, Jackie Friend, Helen Woolley and Chris Edwards battled hard but sadly lost 4-0.
On the same day, the Men's Seniors played on the Lakes course for their Veterans Cup (for those over 70 on the day of the competition) and with a field in excess of 45 entrants there was a big win for Geoff Bentley (34 hcp) who romped home with a score of 42 points in spite of failing to score on one hole.
Geoff was particularly strong on the back nine where he ran up 24 points, including two pars and a hatful of bogeys. As a result Geoff now plays off 31.
In second place, Ian Taylor (18) scored 39 points thanks to a particularly strong front nine where he started with three pars (and a birdie on the 6th) to end up at with 22 at the turn.
Coming home, Ian was undone by the 15th where he failed to score but a par on the next gave him hope but he was too far behind Geoff to make up the difference. Third place went to Mel Clark (19) who scored 38 thanks to birdies on the 2nd and 12th but failures on 15 and 18 proved very costly.
The First Team entertained Stoke Rochford on the Saturday and rain and blustery winds all day meant that conditions were not ideal but made for some exciting golf. It was always going to be close so every match counted and, as a result, the first two matches were going to be crucial and both were played to the 18th hole.
Richard Wilson (Captain) and Lewis Chisholm dovetailed well to stay in contention in their match whilst Paul Clegg and George Grant, despite a slow start and being 2-down at one point, were one-up going into the last five holes.
Richard and Lewis found themselves all square playing the 18th thanks to great birdie from Lewis on the 16th and he then secured a par on 18 but Richard crucially missed a 10ft opportunity for a birdie and with the Stoke pair rolling in for their birdie the team was 1-down.
This became 2-down as Paul and George could not get a hole back and lost by the same score as Richard and Lewis. With Rory Smith and Darren Child also losing the third game things were not looking good.
Chris Steele and Darren Sargood had a great 2-and-1 win but sadly Pete Dickinson and Leon Wyche also lost. So despite Russ Aust and Joe Sargood winning their individual match the team lost 4-2, the first loss at home for over three years. The First Team are now half way through the season and will need a strong second half to give themselves a chance of staying up.
The weekend weather continued into the week and the Seniors Better-Ball competition on the Valley course was severely depleted as a number of teams cancelled due to predicted (and actual) continuous rain.
Of the teams that did venture out there was a clear winning partnership as Graham Smith and George Brand came in with 43 points, with their nearest rivals (Stuart MacDonald and Mike Guy) totalling 39. There was a tight tussle for third spot as four teams all scored 38 but the best of that group were Steve Chisholm and Steve Wooldridge.
The Seniors played a match on the Valley course against Humberstone and captain John Taylor was delighted to lead the team to a whitewash 6-0 victory.
