Oakham United's first pre-season friendly against higher league opposition resulted in a win for the visitors.

Holwell Sports had a shot on target after the first few minutes and only an impressive save by Charlie Griffen prevented them from taking an early lead.

Last Sunday, the Gents at Greetham Valley GC played on the Valley Course for the Chris Southwell Salver – Stableford event - and scoring was very tight with the top 20 players all beating par.

The eventual winner was Paul Clark (hcp 26) who totalled 42 points in a round which had highs and lows but a finishing birdie on the last was sufficient to give him the countback victory over Les Kowal (17).

On Monday, the Seniors at Greetham Valley Golf Club played a Stableford qualifier on the Valley course and Neil Lowndes ended at the top of the leader-board for the second week running when he recorded a score of 41 points.

Neil (hcp 11) won the June Medal last week and should have had an even higher score as he failed to record a score on the 9th after a very solid front eight, which included a birdie on the 4th.

Last Saturday two trophies were up for grabs as the lower handicap golfers at Greetham Valley GC played for the Lime & Stone Trophy and the higher (18+) handicaps played for the Rabbits Trophy.

In the former, Russ Aust (hcp 4) came out on top with an excellent score of 39 points thanks to a steady round which he completed in only one over gross thanks to a total of four birdies, including two in the last four holes.

Last Sunday, the Greetham Valley Golf Club Gents played the Tudor Springs 4somes competition, the winners of which are then qualified to enter the national Daily Mail Foursomes competition.

In the competition the overall winners were Mark Mousley and Dave Morgan with a nett score of 70.5, just ahead of Steve Roche and Chris Proudman who scored 71.0 whilst Chris Hatch and Peter Maksymiw ended up in third place, also on 71.0 but losing out on countback.

The Weekend Gents Medal competition at Greetham Valley Golf Club was played in excellent golfing weather and this was demonstrated as more than a dozen of the top entrants performed at par or better.

In third spot, Jason Greig (hcp 14) had an excellent round for a nett 69 as he started like a train with birdies on the first two holes which took him at the turn to only two over gross.
