Rutland Water Beach and Aqua Park is set to re-open this weekend after levels of blue green algae have fallen.

An Anglian Water spokesperson said: "Following our latest water samples taken today we have seen levels of blue green algae reduce and we will be reopening the Aquapark, Watersports Centre and beach tomorrow, Saturday August 3.

Instead of celebrating his 18th birthday last week, Rutland Formula 4 driver Teddy Wilson was flying to the USA with his focus on the weekend's F4 US Championship round at Virginia International Raceway (VIR).

Last season Teddy, from South Luffenham, made an impressive single-seater debut there with fastest lap awards, pole positions and two podiums against a record-breaking field of 37 on his transition from karts.

A decorated D-Day veteran who served with the famous 7th Armoured Division has swapped stories with a modern-day Desert Rat just weeks before his 101st birthday.

Wilf Hamit is a resident at Rutland Care Village in Oakham and served as a member of 7th Armoured Division, the Desert Rats for more than six years – initially in France, being evacuated from Dunkirk, then into North Africa, Italy and finally Germany during the Second World War.

The Greetham Valley Club Championships are normally played over 36 holes, over a weekend, but this year the inclement weather on Sunday led to the cancellation of the second 18 holes.

This meant that the championships were decided on the first round, and in the Gents section Trevor Smith (hcp 1) retained his title of Club Champion with a gross score of 74, just beating Leon Wyche (4) on countback.

Rutland County Council is encouraging residents to avoid littering, take care when recycling and to recycle more of the right items in their grey bins over the summer holidays.

The council collects household waste and recycling from homes across the county, as well as operating two large recycling centres near Morcott and Cottesmore, which are free to use.
