Replacing a 100-year-old railway bridge looks set to close a main Rutland road for three months.

Network Rail is carrying out work to demolish the railway bridge at Manton Road, which is over 100 years old, and install a new stronger one, so it remains fit for purpose for years to come.

The work to upgrade the railway bridge is a £2.8M project. It will mean train services can continue running safely and reliably for future generations.

The work follows a planning application to Rutland County Council, as previously reported by Nub News.

Network Rail says teams are already onsite constructing compounds and the main part of the work on the bridge will begin on Monday 12 April.

For this vital work to take place safely, Manton Road (A6003) will be closed at the bridge from Monday 12 April until Monday 5 July. A signposted diversion will be in place for drivers. The footpath will remain open for pedestrians and cyclists throughout the work.

Network Rail says carrying out repairs to the bridge, instead of replacing it, would cause more disruption for people in the community in future.

The road closure is planned until Monday 5 July, but it will open as soon as possible when it is safe to do so.
