Oakham residents are welcoming plans for the town to have its first cinema since the 1980s.

Rutland Kino has announced it has signed a long term lease to create a two-screen cinema at Victoria Hall.

Subject to planning approval and funding, Andrew Robinson and Genevieve Margrett hope to open the Rutland Kino cinema next summer.

Genevieve has spent around 5 years looking for a site in the town and Andrew, who lives in Rutland, is a former cinema company chief executive.

Some £2million is sought to create 89 seats in screen one and 30 seats in screen two as well as a café and lounge area.

The pair said on Facebook: "It's been one heck of a wait.... but we're very excited to announce that Rutland Kino is back!"

Oakham Mayor Zoe Nealson said earlier this week: "Exciting news for Oakham today as Rutland Kino have announced that they have agreed a long term lease with the trustees of Victoria Hall and, if they can raise the funds needed, will be bringing a 2 screen cinema to the High Street in 2022

.

"Oakham Town Council supports all businesses in our town and feels that this is a venture that has long been wanted by residents. "

Among the residents commenting on Facebook, Lucy Wheeler said: "This is SO exciting!! Lots of small cinemas around to get inspiration from too. Masses of luck!"

Paula Reed-Smith said: "Sounds exciting - look forward to finding out more."

Steve Dodge Tranmer said: "That's brilliant...not so far to travel to see a film now."

The public consultation on Rutland Kino will be on Wednesday June 9 from 2pm at Victoria Hall.
