Rutland MP Alicia Kearns has declared victory in her battle against gay conversion therapy.

The MP has spoken out against the practice many times and led the campaign in Parliament to secure a ban on the practice since her election in 2019.

This afternoon, Mrs Kearns said: "Today I won that fight, when the Queen announced that our Government will bring forward a ban."

The government plans to consult with public before banning the practice.

The MP posted on Facebook: "The Queen's speech today sends a very powerful message: love is not a pathology, and it does not need treating. LGBTQ+ so-called Conversion Therapy is little more than bigotry and quackery packaged up by sinister charlatans to snare and profit off the vulnerable.

"This ban is a tribute to the survivors of conversion therapy, to those whose lives were lost too soon because of this abhorrent abuse, and to all those hurting or made ashamed for being who they are."

She added: "LGBTQ+ people must have the liberty to live their lives free from identity-based violence and abuse. This ban will save lives, and I'm so thankful to all the survivors who bravely shared their stories with me, and everyone who has joined me in campaigning for this ban."

Mrs Kearns has just written about the campaign in Attitude magazine.

She also wrote about the issue in the House magazine, which is aimed at Lords and MPs, as Nub News previously reported.

The government's move follows earlier assurances Mrs Kearns also received from the government, as Nub News also reported.
