Rutland MP Alicia Kearns has won assurances the government shares her commitment to ending 'gay conversion therapy'.

The MP sent a written question to Equalities Minister Kemi Badenoch MP highlighting international condemnation of the practice and urging the government to bring forward legislation to ban it, as is the case in Germany and Canada.

The move follows Mrs Kearns Alicia recently organising a meeting of MPs with the Secretary of State Liz Truss to discuss the issue and show their support for ending the practice.

Ms Badenoch replied the government fundamentally disagreed with attempts to change people's sexuality and she was working with other MPs on the issue to outline plans for such a ban.

She added: "We are aware of the developments that have been made in Germany, Canada and elsewhere. Officials are in discussion with international policy counterparts, in order to fully understand the detail around their measures, and to inform the UK's next steps."

Mrs Kearns said in response: ""I am pleased the Government share my commitment to end this barbaric and fraudulent practice, and it is especially apt that they have confirmed their steadfast support during pride month.

"I welcome that Ministers are working on legislative options, and I have urged them to share publicly current thinking and next steps."
