A new Sushi restaurant has opened on the former site of one of Oakham's most popular eateries in Bakers Yard, Church Street.

Owners Ga and Basco Lee opened the doors on their exciting new venture on the 16th of April 2022, providing fresh sushi and popular Japanese hot dishes to the people of Oakham.

The duo, who live in Stamford but are originally from Hong Kong, began making sushi for their family, friends, and two boys, Daniel and Samuel, and the response was unanimous: you have to share this with the world!

Basco explained: "A HongKonger like me loves Japanese food, and I was always looking for a good Japanese restaurant in the area, but there isn't one nearby. Leicester is great, but it's a bit far, and then we found Oakham – which is so much nicer!

"This is obviously a popular place with the local people, but the choice for dining out is limited and there weren't any restaurants serving Japanese style like food. I hope to give another choice and variety to the local people."

At the moment, Ga is working in the kitchen, while Basco deals with the front of house team and admin. However, Basco's time in the UK started much earlier than this when he came to study in the UK some years ago.

While studying at the University of Brighton, Basco learned to enjoy the British culture very much. So, after having his own family, he decided to move back to the UK and start his own business.

Coming to the UK to set up a new business is undoubtedly a daunting task when English is your second language, however, Basco has had the ongoing support of his family, which has been invaluable.

Basco said: "Ga and I have known each other, like, forever – so running a restaurant together is another adventure for the family. We search for a better solution when we struggle, and look for the best ways to bring fantastic taste and flavour to our customers. Plus we already have a great front of house team," he laughed, "so I can sit back and relax."

Isobelle and Holly work front of house at the restaurant. They said: "It's amazing to work here. Joining a company this new is really exciting."

Holly added: "My favourite dish is the Japanese curry." Isobelle recommended the King salmon roll or the always-popular gyozas.

For visitors who have never tried sushi, Basco recommended that they look for the dishes on the restaurant's Instagram or Facebook, because this is where you will find the dishes that visually appeal the most to you - then when you come into the restaurant, you will have an idea of what might tickle your tastebuds.

Basco concluded: "It's going well and we keep improving our menu to meet the locals need, for example we have extended most of our Sushi dishes to be Gluten Free.

"Now we are looking forward to seeing more people in the restaurant."

Opening times for the restaurant have been extended from 12pm until 3pm and then 6pm until 9pm Tuesday to Friday, and from 12pm until 7pm on Saturday, meaning that Oakham locals will be able to satisfy that sushi craving later and longer.

You can find the restaurant at the Bakers Yard on 4 Church Street, or follow their Facebook page for the latest news from this promising new venture.
