Guinness World Record have been publishing their iconic books since 1955, with 27th August 2025 marking the book's 70th Birthday.

Over the last seventy years, Oakham has broken a few world records, with two notable ones including: the largest jam filled biscuit and the fastest toilet.

On 14th June 2017, Great British Bake Off Winner Frances Quinn teamed up with Hambleton Bakery to create the biggest jam-filled biscuit ever made.

The biscuit, which was in the shape of a tennis racket, was named the Grand Slammy Dodger to celebrate the Wimbledon Finals.

The final biscuit weighed 26.76kg (or 58lb 15 oz) and was 52.5 cm in width, 127.7 cm in length and 9.5cm in depth, made of 12kg of plain flour, 4.8kg of icing sugar, 1.92kg egg yolk, 7.2kg butter, 10g vanilla, 10g salt, 400g water and 4kg strawberry jam.

After the official weigh-in and measure by the Guinness World Record judge, the biscuit was distributed for free in six of the Hambleton Bakery shops.

On 15th September 2018, four engineering students from Harringon School in Rutland built the fastest motorised toilet.

The 18-year-old students fixed a toilet and cistern to a go-kart frame, powered by a 250 cc Yamaha engine and used a toilet brush as the gear stick.

The HAWC (Highly Advanced Water Closet) reached a top speed of over 70mph (113.531 km/h) on a straight track at Elvington Airfield in North Yorkshire.

The toilet was driven by Ellis and was flushed at the end of the attempt to prove it still functioned as required.

Other notable local World Record Attempts include Sigi Solly from Uffington attempting to sail a dinghy single-handedly for the longest time on Rutland Water.

Sigi sailed 18.4 miles on the water in August 2025 but had to stop due to lightning making it too dangerous to continue.

His attempt successfully raised over £3,800 to Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis Support.

There was also an attempt for the Worlds Biggest Pub Quiz at The White Lion Inn in Whissendine in February 2016, raising funds for Crohn's UK.
