Anglian Water have written to customers across the local area this month detailing an increase in costs from April 2023.

Every February, the company publish their water and sewerage service charges for the coming year online and in each bill, and this year is no exception.

Single households could expect an increase of more than 10%, which the company have said aligns with The Water Services Regulation Authority (OFWAT)'s expectations.

The company acknowledge that 'money can be a difficult and sensitive subject', particularly with the cost-of-living crisis, and have published details of why your water bill might have increased how you can watch your spending.

Their website clarifies that bills can increase because:

  • there has been a change in Anglian Water charges
  • you are using more water
  • your home has faulty fittings
  • new appliances are using more water
  • you have more members of your household

They have also released a list of ways to cut down on your usage:

  • use the eco setting on appliances
  • shower for under 5 minutes
  • only wash clothes on a full load

A spokesperson for Anglian Water said: "The typical bill increases as shown in the occupancy table on our website are based on consistent usage year on year charged on a measured (metered) basis, e.g. for a one person household using 145 litres per day in both 22-23 and in 23-24 the bill increase will be 10.7%. This typical bill increase aligns with OFWAT's definition of bill impacts and does assume a constant level of consumption.

"Naturally, the more water a household uses, the higher percentage increase will be seen in the bill. This aligns with our policy of keeping fixed charges as low as possible which are costs that do not vary with the volume of water consumed.

"The average bill is based on the overall change in all bills year on year based on the weighted average of both measured and unmeasured charges. It takes into account changes year on year in the proportion of customers who are charged on a measured basis (i.e. circa 10,000 customers switch from (higher) unmeasured to (lower) measured charges per year), and also forecast changes in usage year on year (average measured usage for 23-24 is forecast to be approximately 1.5m 31.6% lower than for 22-23)."
