Rutland Sailing Club is welcomed Blind Sailing this weekend.

Rutland Sailing Club, based on the south shore of Rutland Water, has welcomed the teams from across the globe for a Blind Sailing UK event taking place on the reservoir.

Blind Sailing is a UK charity who help blind and partially sighted sailors get out on the water.

The organisation is at the heart of sailing in Great Britain, providing a safe place to dip your toe in the water for the first time or set your goals to represent your country, there is something in Blind Sailing for everyone to enjoy.

They rely on volunteers to provide a fun and safe environment, and each volunteer offers help in different ways: some onshore keeping the team guide dogs safe, and others who are all qualified under the Royal Yachting Association with a mix of experience who support on the water.

The organisation has been recognised by the Royal Yachting Association, and promises an exciting weekend of sailing at Rutland Water this weekend, Thursday 16 November - Sunday 19 November 2023.

Rutland is a great spot for visually impaired and blind sailors to hit the water, as it has no tide but long stretches, a variety of wind and water conditions, experiences waves, and promises the challenge of shifting, changeable wind conditions because of the surrounding hills and trees.

It also brags a large fleet of experienced sailors and volunteers happy to support both regular and visiting groups who may need support from the shore and on the water.

This weekend's International Blind Sailing Keelboat League 2023 will see competitive sailing, including teams from Australia, France and Great Britain, who have travelled from far and wide to attend the race meet and compete with their peers.

You can watch the racing at Rutland Sailing Club, Gibbet Ln, Edith Weston, Oakham LE15 8HJ on Friday and Saturday, with training taking place throughout the day today, Thursday 16 November.

You can also take this opportunity to find out more about the club and how to become a member.
