A TV reporter has spoken of her ordeal as she reported on the 'religious festival' at the Rutland Showground.

Amelia Harper is the East of England correspondent for the fledgling tv channel GB News.

Early today she commented on a police tweet mentioning arrests in the Oakham area, saying "I will have more on this on @GBNEWS later today."

The journalist, for the network that was launched a little over a week ago, said this afternoon on twitter: "Today I was just trying to do my job. But it's ended in unbelievable harassment. I've been physically pushed, had my camera kit grabbed, approached in my face by large groups, yelled & sworn at by multiple people and been sexualised. "

Amelia also commented: "Why are women dealing with this in the 21st century? It's unacceptable. Had I been a male (reporter) would I have had this? I don't know. I've had lots of support from my phenomenal work colleagues and bosses."

The journalist said the perpetrators were "just groups of rowdy children would you believe, teenagers and young adults."

She said incidents happened whilst she was "literally standing there staring down the LiveU waiting to go live, having to physically put my arms out to stop people from taking my camera kit, all the while being pushed around by rowdy people. Bloody horrible."

Amelia further responded on twitter: "Oh this was while I was waiting to go live. I was going round many different locations trying to find somewhere out of sight. Wherever I went I was getting yelled at from cars. Only one "are you ok?" - which meant a lot as I was literally fighting back tears on the phone."

Asked why she was being targeted, Amelia said: "Because I was the only one with a camera! It's like a magnet!."

Earlier today, Amelia said on twitter: "Currently inside a locked McDonalds near Rutland Showground seeing first hand the intimidation that's happening towards staff here from visitors to the religious festival. I'm told this is mild. Manager told me some staff have been spat at with COVID threats.

"Manager says their building has been forced into. Just heard reports of a young man carrying a blade."

She also said at the time: "I've spoken to a couple of the young festival goers, approx teenage age, and they say it's the actions of a minority tarnishing the rest of the group."

After her latest posts Amelia also commented: "I will point out again that my bosses have taken it very seriously, I'm very lucky to have their support. My reporter colleagues have been phenomenal too."

News of the reporter's ordeal was revealed on social media this evening by Oakham commentator and blogger Martin Brookes.

Martin noted how Amelia was "attacked by mob attending Christian Travellers Festival at the Rutland County Showground."

He said on his website: "Shocking to read tweets from Amelia she was just doing her job."

Martin also said to Amelia on twitter: "This is terrible please come back to Oakham when it is more civilised."
