Rutland County Council's Fostering Service is looking for people to join a new fostering panel that recommends families for approval as foster carers.

Skilled and committed foster carers provide safe and protective environments for many children and young people in Rutland every day.

The role of the county's fostering panel is to facilitate and monitor the care provided by local foster carers through a rigorous assessment and approval process.

Coun David Wilby, Cabinet Member for Safeguarding Children and Young People at Rutland County Council, said: "This is a wonderful opportunity for somebody to make a hugely positive impact on their community and the lives of young people.

"Children who need foster care can be among some of the most vulnerable in our society.

"They have often experienced abuse, risk and disadvantage.

"As a member of the fostering panel, you will be in a position to make a significant contribution to their lives. The role is not only extremely important but tremendously rewarding.

"People of all experiences and backgrounds can apply to become a member of the fostering panel.

The fostering panel meets approximately every two months, when members are asked to recommend the approval of new and existing foster carers.

Some reading and preparation work is required before each meeting and new members will be asked to attend training and development sessions, to gain the necessary skills.

Members must also undergo a Disclosure and Barring Service check and provide references. Anyone successfully appointed to the panel is paid on a sessional basis for their time, preparation work and training and development sessions.

Members are expected to attend panels regularly and consistently so applicants need to consider whether they have enough free time to ensure their availability.
