Residents in Oakham and surrounding villages have reported feeling the effects of an earthquake recorded close to Melton Mowbray tonight (Weds).

The British Geological Survey has confirmed it recorded an earthquake of 2.4 magnitude at 7.22pm, with the epicentre about 4km north east of Melton.

It has received reports from people who felt the tremors in Oakham and villages and says typical descriptions of the earth quake include 'sounded like thunder', 'thought it was a train passing', 'there was a very deep rumble' and 'the windows rattled'.

The British Geological Survey is asking anyone who felt the earthquake to fill in an online survey which can be found by clicking the red button below.
