PART of the access and exit from Oakham Castle has been restricted because of damage to steps leading from Cutts Close to the castle.

The area is now regarded as unstable and unsafe and so the steps have been closed until further notice.

a statement from Rutland County council says it is seeking advice from English Heritage to find the most appropriate way forward.

It adds: "Due to the historic significance of this site, it may take some time."

The statement adds: "The recent damage has, unfortunately, affected the steps and also caused significant damage to the motte.

"We appreciate everyone's patience and understanding while specialist advice is sought and the safest, most appropriate solution is considered."
