After a long wait for residents, Rutland County Council (RCC) has decided to close Catmose Sports Centre.

Unable to find a provider to run the centre at nil-cost to the council, the facility will be closing.

The sports centre looked set to close last year but, following public outcry, the council opted to extend the contract with the operator, Stevenage Leisure Ltd., by one year.

The March Full Council did not reach a final decision on the award of a new leisure contract as hoped, which is why this decision has taken longer to arrive than expected.

The decision was finally made last night, Thursday 18 April.

Earlier in the week, the Lib Dem Cabinet suggested the removal of two new proposed council officer positions and use those funds to keep Catmose Sports Centre running.

However, this recommendation was rejected by the full council last night, with a final vote of:

6 - for

16 - against

3 - abstentions
