Coronavirus crisis: MasterChef Simon Spooner's success with luxury lockdown deliveries

After wowing the country with his creations on TV's Masterchef two years ago, Simon Spooner is cooking up a similar storm with his luxury lockdown deliveries.

The 36-year-old stay-at-home dad of two once quit a corporate career for the good life in the country, where he now runs Knife, Fork and Spooner, a private chef and events business based in Rutland.

Simon told Nub News: "I offer bespoke dinner parties, event catering and wedding catering across the UK. Unlike many others, all of the menus I create are tailored to the specific event and the individuals organising it, ensuring that each event is unique and a true reflection of the whole occasion."

Since the lockdown, however, all Simon's events have had to be postponed either to late in the year or next year, forcing him to adapt, creating a high-end meal delivery service within ten miles of Ketton. The menu changes each week and deliveries are made on a Saturday.

The take-away business has been highly successful for several reasons.

Simon explained: "Some are just looking for a treat in a time where they are very limited, some are looking for a break from cooking every single day and some use it as it's a guaranteed meal and they don't have to go to the supermarket.

"The menus are devised based on the produce available, I am constantly talking to my local suppliers as to what they have an abundance of and also what travels well and can be simply finished off at home.

"My usual high end food doesn't translate very well to a delivery service so it is all about creating delicious dishes that are still luxurious but are easy to reheat at home.

"I have also been delivering bespoke meals for special occasions such as birthdays and wedding anniversaries, allowing households to have a little luxury and still celebrate during lockdown!"

Once the lockdown is over, Simon doubts much will change, with the deliveries continuing and his classes and events returning.

"It seems everyone with a frying pan and a social media account is trying to be the next Jamie Oliver so I think I will just focus on feeding people!"

He added: "I am still taking a lot of bookings for events next year, especially weddings. A lot of couples have a bit more time on their hands at the moment so if you would like to discuss a bespoke wedding menu do get in touch."
