Coronavirus crisis: No cases and no deaths in Rutland today for third Monday running

By The Editor 5th Jun 2021

Rutland has recorded no Covid-19 cases today, after two at the weekend.

However, due to how such things are calculated, its 7-day case rate has risen from 3 to five cases over the past week.

The UK government's Covid-19 tracker now reports a 7-day rate of 12.5 cases per 100,000, which is less than half the UK rate of 27.2 cases per 100,000.

Today's zero cases compares with none last Monday and none the Monday before, making today the third Monday in succession without a case reported.

Rutland has 1687 cases recorded since the start of the pandemic- about one case for every 25 residents. This compares with the England average of almost one-in-15.

The number of deaths remains at 62- about one for every 600 residents, which compares with the national average of one-in-500 residents.

Rutland's last recorded death was on the last Wednesday of April, the only death with Covid-19 recorded in Rutland during April and so far in May.

Meanwhile, in Lincolnshire, South Kesteven recorded one case today, making it seven over the Bank Holiday Weekend.

This compares with eight last Monday and four the Monday before.

The 7-day infection rate for the district fell from 22.5 cases per 100,000 on Friday to 20.4 cases yesterday and 17.6 cases per 100,000 today, based on 25 cases in the week to Bank Holiday Monday.

This rate of 17.6 compares with the England average of 27.2, which has been creeping up slightly in recent weeks after a substantial fall.

Whilst the district figures fluctuate, the latest figures remain among the lowest since last year and less than a twentieth of figures earlier in the year when the weekly rate exceeded 400 cases per 100,000.

The grand total of 7647 cases in South Kesteven since the start of the pandemic is equivalent to just over one case per 20 residents. The national average is about one-in-15.

There were no deaths recorded in the district but the first fatality in nearly 6 weeks last weekend puts the district's death tally on 267, equivalent to about one-in-600 residents, which is better than the England average of one-in-500 residents.

Overall, May has seen 1,008 COVID-19 cases for the entire month in Greater Lincolnshire — down 38% on April's figure of 1,633.

The county's death rate has decreased from 14 in April to six this month — a drop of 57%.

Both Rutland and South Kesteven recorded one death apiece.

The government's COVID-19 dashboard on Monday recorded 15 new cases in Lincolnshire, two in North Lincolnshire and one in North East Lincolnshire.

There were also no deaths confirmed. These figures include deaths both in and out of hospitals, as well as residents in hospitals outside the county.

NHS England no longer reports deaths in the region's hospitals on weekends of bank holidays- leaving the monthly tally at seven, the same as April.

On Monday, national cases increased by 3,383 to 4,487,339, while deaths rose by one to 127,782.

As people enjoyed the bank holiday sunshine on Monday, scientists nationally have been urging government to delay the lockdown restrictions easing planned for June 21.

They said there are signs the UK is heading for a third wave and urged caution.

However, hospitality bosses have said further delays would cause more pain for the sector.

Kate Nicholls, chief executive of industry body UK Hospitality, has told the BBC: "It would be devastating for many of our members and catastrophic for those not able to open at all (such as) nightclubs and music venues and for those with restricted opening, so wedding venues and indoor leisure."

They called on government support, due to end in July, to be extended if the unlocking were to take longer than planned.

Meanwhile, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development has said the UK is likely to grow 7.2% in 2021, a stronger improvement from its March projection of 5.1%.

The report said the UK's growth would be the fastest among the large rich countries.
