Members of Oakham Cricket Club are taking part in a 'virtual' bike ride and marathon.
This year was set to be a big year for for the club, with all three senior teams being promoted in 2019 and 20202 being its 150th year anniversary.
However, the lockdown means it is no longer possible to take to the field on a Saturday/Sunday or celebrate this big year for the club.
The club's Rob Taylor, a former international cricketer for Scotland, explained: "Lock down presents its own challenges for everyone but a few club members have been getting out their bikes, or putting on their trainers and covering some miles around Rutland so this got us thinking..."
It meant that starting on Sunday (April 26), Rob, plus Mark Owen, Angus Owen, Will Begy, Tom Banham, Tom Clifton, Charlie Baker and Ollie Hubbard will cycle/run the distance needed to travel from Oakham Cricket Club to The Grange Cricket Club in Edinburgh.
The plan is to cover the 614 miles in seven days, finishing this coming Saturday (May 2). But instead of venturing up to Edinburgh, instead members will run and cycle locally in Rutland.
Rob told Oakham Nub News some members will ride hundred miles over the week, while others will run the 26 mile length of a marathon.
During Rob's playing career with Scotland, The Grange was and still is the ground a lot of International matches are played.
He continued: "It was such a great place to play with an excellent atmosphere. So when we were deciding a destination - this came straight to mind."
All funds we raised will be donated to the Trussell Trust Food Bank in Rutland and Stamford, to help bring food to those in need during these challenging times.
The club aims to raise £1,000 but already, at the halfway stage according to their JustGiving Page , supporters have donated £880.
Rob added: "We chose the Rutland and Stamford foodbank
because we felt, that at this time, no one should struggle to put food on the tables for their family and the Oakham branch is the most used foodbank per capita in Leicestershire. "We will be ticking off certain land marks along the "Virtual route" and if anyone would like to join us for some guest miles then please do!"
