Oakham cafe plans the odd jazz night

An Oakham town centre cafe/restaurant plans to jazz up the odd evening by opening later once a month.

Stray's Coffee, which opened at 2 High Street in October, has received planning approval for the later opening from Rutland County Council.

The application, submitted in February before the lockdown, said: "This is to facilitate their live jazz event which they currently hold in Oakham on Saturday afternoons."

Previously, the business received approval to open from 9am to 5pm daily, when it went through the planning process last year.

A council report said: "It is considered that by securing the extended time to just once a month that the business will not

generate any extensive noise or disturbance during sustained unsociable hours.

"The existing use is in conformity with the general use of buildings in this town centre location and the amended operating hours condition is considered not to increase any adverse impacts such as noise and disturbance that would be of any detriment to nearby residential amenity."

It continued: "The proposal to change operating hours is considered to complement this conforming use which will

not impact on the vitality or viability of Oakham Town Centre.

"Provisions are to be put in place with a condition securing defined hours of operation which will ensure no adverse impacts in terms of noise and disturbance on occupiers of surrounding buildings."

Stray's has been closed in recent weeks due to the lockdown.

Their Oakham Facebook Page commented recently: "We're gonna miss making coffee for you and playing great jazz.

"We'll be working on housekeeping, getting our website updated as lots of other joyous admin tasks, while we get through this next period.

"There won't be much to tell you over the next few weeks, so just remember that this short term pain is for our long term gain. We look forward to seeing when you're allowed to Stray' again and until then, adios from all of us here!"
