A reminder on where to get food if you are staying at home to protect yourself against coronavirus has been issued by Rutland County Council.

Government lockdown guidance in response to coronavirus has been in place for more than a month. As part of these preventative measures, some people are shielding themselves at home after being advised by the NHS that they are 'extremely vulnerable' to the virus. Others are self-isolating with coronavirus symptoms or following stay at home measures like shopping as infrequently as possible.

The council is also aware that a number of people may be struggling to shop for food after having their hours reduced at work or losing their main source of income entirely.

Coun Alan Walters, Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care and Health, said: "As the UK lockdown continues and stay at home guidance remains in place, in whatever form, we know there are people who continue to face complications when obtaining food – either because of personal circumstances or because they are at increased clinical risk from the virus."

Anyone who is classed as being extremely vulnerable to coronavirus and following government shielding advice can access food through a national delivery scheme. Full details of the scheme and how to apply, if you feel vulnerable, can be found online.

There is also a comprehensive network of good neighbour schemes in place across Rutland, offering help and support with food shopping and collecting medicine. Further details of this can be found online.

The Rutland Foodbank has increased its support for people who may be struggling to shop for food because their income has been affected by coronavirus. Information about how to access the foodbank or make a donation can be found online at: rutland.foodbank.org.uk.

Lastly, Rutland County Council has a dedicated crisis helpline in place for people who have been impacted by coronavirus and have no one to support them. This includes people who are 'shielding' and have concerns about their access to food and medicine, or feel isolated and require support.

The helpline is also available for people who do not meet the government's criteria for 'extremely vulnerable' but still require immediate assistance.

Coun Alan Walters added: "Whatever the situation may be, it's important that people know where and how to get food for themselves and their families. There is no shortage of food locally and support is available to anyone who needs it."
