Coronavirus crisis: Sharp rise in Rutland case numbers

By The Editor 29th Jun 2021

Rutland has recorded 11 more cases of Covid-19 over the weekend.

But once more, there were no deaths.

Some 33 cases were recorded in the week to yesterday, compared with 26 in the week to Friday and 13 in the week to last Sunday.

However, the 7-day case rate, which now stands at 82.7 remains well below the England average of 119.5 cases per 100,000.

The weekend's 11 cases compares with the 7 recorded last weekend and zero the weekend before.

England's 7-day case rate has crept up in recent weeks, whilst in Rutland it has fluctuated at low levels, at one stage recently amongst the lowest in the country, before increasing strongly over the past week or so.

Rutland has now recorded 1765 cases recorded since the start of the pandemic- about one case for every 25 residents. This compares with the England average of almost one-in-15.

The number of deaths remains at 65, the same as Friday- about one for every 600 residents, which compares with the national average of one-in-500 residents.

Rutland's last recorded death was on the last Wednesday of April, the only death with Covid-19 recorded in Rutland during April and so far in May and June.

Meanwhile, in Lincolnshire, the 7-day case rate for South Kesteven remained stable over the weekend, despite growing case numbers nationally and across Lincolnshire.

Some 57 cases of Covid-19 have been recorded in the district in the 7 days to Sunday, the same as the week to Friday, a slight increase on the 51 recorded in the week to last Sunday.

This gives South Kesteven a 7-day rate of 40 cases per 100,000, the same as Friday, which compares with 35.8 last Sunday.

This is a third of the England average of 119.5 cases per 100,000, which stood at 85.5 last Sunday.

This is despite 27 cases being recorded over the weekend, compared with 15 last weekend.

No deaths were recorded and the last in the district was over a month ago, with two fatalities in just over two months.

Overall, across Greater Lincolnshire, there were 1,146 cases of coronavirus last week- — a rise of 94% week-on-week, with hospitalisations staying low and just one COVID-related death.

Over the weekend health secretary Matt Hancock, who was facing deep criticism for his breaching COVID rules by engaging in an affair with his aide while restrictions were in place, stepped down and was replaced by former chancellor Sajid Javid.

Mr Javid is due to update MPs in the House of Commons on his plans for the lifting of restrictions on Monday afternoon, as week-on-week national cases are up 59%.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson is expected to announce, through Mr Javid, that July 19 will remain the target date for relaxing rules in England.

A review of the data could take place on July 5 to see the situation amid rising cases of the Delta variant, but the situation is not suggested so far to have changed.
