Coronavirus crisis: Volunteers' Week with a difference

30th May 2020 | Local News

Rutland Community Wellbeing Service wants to mark Volunteers' Week a little differently this year!

Despite not being able to meet up, the service, which is part of Citizen's Advice Rutland, has put together online ways to champion, recognise and equip volunteers locally.

This has been the year of remarkable volunteer activity, with large neighbourhood groups forming in the face of the pandemic to support the vulnerable, lonely, elderly and self-isolating within their own community.

RCWS also wants to salute volunteers who have worked faithfully in charities and voluntary organisations that have been the back bone of our communities for a long time, and who may now be having to rethink how they operate in the future.

There will be a series of five free webinars running through the week next week.

These are designed to appeal to volunteers and those interested in supporting the voluntary sector, as well as anyone generally interested in the topics!

All are welcome to sign up on Eventbrite to register a place, and attend as many as they are interested in.

Each webinar starts at 2.30pm and lasts for half an hour.

Invitation codes will be sent to those who have registered.

Monday 1st June – Supporting Young People in Lockdown – looking at how young people can thrive despite the isolation, and hold on to their dreams and aspirations despite the interruption to their plans.

Tuesday 2nd June - Telling Your Story – going back to the story behind the work is crucial for motivation. This webinar will look at the elements of how to tell an authentic story, and how to communicate it effectively both verbally and digitally.

Wednesday 3rd June – Food, Glorious Food – this webinar explores the sourcing, delivery and cooking of meals during this time. A conversation with Rutland Foodbank, Root and Branch Out CIC, and the owner and head chef of the acclaimed Olive Branch Restaurant in Clipsham. It includes a

cookery demonstration.

Thursday 4th June – Ask the Funder – a chance to hear the hot off the press updates on funding from Oliver Savage of the National Lottery fund and Louise Cotton from the Community Fund. There will be space to ask questions and gain an understanding of how to go forward in applying for funding.

Friday 5th June – Online Volunteers Party – all volunteers of any description are invited to join in the fun – music, poetry, and a queue of people wanting to express their thanks for all the volunteers have done for their community.

Rutland Radio will also be running interviews with volunteers from a variety of Rutland charities throughout the week, at 8.50am each morning. Tune in to hear their stories!
