Dying Matters Rutland announce practical guide to bereavement
By James Smith 30th Apr 2026
A new practical guide to bereavement is set to be launched for people in Rutland.
Dying Matters Rutland (DMR) will announce a new online service at their free-to-attend event Dead Easy: A Practical Guide to the Inevitable on May 4 at 2pm at Rutland Showground.
DMR is collaborating with online platform provider AfterLoss to promote a step-by-step guide through the practical side of bereavement.
DMR patron Rutland Lord-Lieutenant Dr Sarah Furness: "We never know when we will die, but we all know that we will. And it is so important to do the simple, practical things in advance.
"Planning ahead is an act of love."
"Make sure your will is up to date – I know people who didn't do that and the effects can be devastating.
"For example, if your marriage ends and you find a new partner, you may want to make sure they benefit from your estate, otherwise they will be locked out of it because they have no legal rights."
Dr Furness added: "If your greatest fear is living completely incapacitated and bed-bound, then you need to make clear in writing that in the event of an infection requiring antibiotics you do not wish to receive them.
"This is easily done by completing An Advance Directive, which is on the DMR website.
"It is so helpful for your loved ones if they can easily find important financial and legal information about you like your will, National Insurance and NHS numbers, and bank and pension details. Without that, they will have to plough through your belongings at a very difficult time."
