Rutland County Museum is holding a family fun day next month as part of celebrations to mark its 50th anniversary as one of the county's favourite visitor attractions.

The Oakham museum tells the story of Rutland's history, archaeology and geology, and was officially opened on 12 May 1969 after 10 years' campaigning and fundraising by local charity Friends of Rutland County Museum.

The museum's 50th anniversary Family Day takes place on Saturday, 11 May and will be supporting the national Get Creative Festival, with free arts and crafts activities for children aged four and older.

All the crafts will all have a textile theme and include puppet making, embroidery and French knitting. Members from the Rutland Quilters group will also be demonstrating their techniques and helping visitors to have a go themselves.

There are two sessions running from 10am to 12pm and 1pm to 3pm. Entry costs £2 per child, while adults go free. There is no need to book, although spaces are limited.

Other events taking place this year as part of Rutland County Museum's 50th anniversary celebrations include

· Exhibition: 50 Years of Family Board Games, 13 July - 7 September

· Summer Workshop: Space 1969 – The Moon Landing, 31 July

· Exhibition: Victorian and Edwardian Back to School, 21 September - 23 November

· Artefact unveiling and Friends of Rutland County Museum 60th anniversary celebration, October 2019
