The iconic red flag of the Merchant Navy, known as the "Red Ensign" or "Red Duster", is on proud display at Oakham Castle, following yesterday's ceremony to mark Merchant Navy Day.

The ceremony was attended by veterans and residents, as well as the Lord-Lieutenant of Rutland Dr Sarah Furness, Rutland High Sheriff Richard Cole and the Chair of Rutland Council Cllr Andrew Brown.

Based on the date that marked the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939, every year on 3rd September current members of the Merchant Navy, veterans and the public gather to commemorate the important efforts of the navy, both past and present.

Run and organised by the Seafarers' Charity, these commemorations aim to raise awareness for the key role the navy played in both world wars, bringing supplies and troops to and from Europe.

The charity also wants to thank the approximately 80,000 men and women work at sea in a dangerous working environment far from loved ones. Funds raised by Merchant Navy Day will go towards maritime welfare charities which support both active and retired members of the merchant navy.
