Plans have been submitted to convert a former Oakham radio station into flats.

Mr S Murray of Market Street, Oakham, seeks to carry out the work at 40 Melton Road.

He seeks to change the use of a shop and two office suites into three two-bed apartments.

If approved, the work would include demolishing two projecting shop fronts and installing three new windows and three new doors and minor alterations on the listed building.

The planning application to Rutland County Council said: "Given the downturn in demand for both commercial and retail use, the current owner is seeking approval to convert 2 units on the ground floor and 1 unit on the first floor to residential apartments."

The application said the 18th century building has a variety of retail, commercial and residential uses since the 1980s.

"This application is to revert to residential for two thirds of the ground floor and one third of the first floor. "

One of the ground floor units, it continued, is currently empty following the closure of Rutland Radio. It features two radio studios.

The application said: "It is proposed to partially strip out the studio boxes and reconfigure the floor plan to form a 2 bedroom apartment with a new kitchen and a new bathroom. Some alterations to doors and windows will be required. "

The application has yet to be determined by Rutland County Council.
