Former Cold War Monitoring bunker in Rutland up for auction with planning permission for ‘Grand Designs-style' renovation

A former nuclear bunker site in Uppingham, Rutland that has been given planning consent to build an exclusive 'Grand Designs- style' modern home, will go up for auction this month.
The site, which consists of a 1.4-acre bunker and former reservoir site, is approximately half a mile from Uppingham Town Centre. It was originally one of 1,500 underground monitoring posts that were opened for the Royal Observer Corps (ROC) to monitor and report nuclear bursts and radio-active fall out in the height of the Cold War.

The Uppingham bunker, which was created in 1960 and decommissioned in 1968, has been given planning permission by Rutland County Council for a modern, 'Grand Designs-style' house to be built on the land.
According to auctioneers, the planning permission is for a 'one off large home' with 'cathedral-type ceilings,' a large glass frontage, two floors of stunning accommodation and views across the surrounding countryside. The site also has the added bonus of being in close proximity to Uppingham, a highly sought after market town which is rated highly for its great local schools, connections to London and beautiful surrounding countryside.

The bunker has been given a guide price of £650,000 and will be included, along with 180 other properties, in a live-streamed auction on 24th April.
Andrew Parker, partner and auctioneer at SDL Property Auctions, said: "A nuclear bunker site going up for auction is something of a rarity itself but to have a site like this, with its unique Cold War history, as well as planning permission to build a fantastic luxury home in one of the best locations in the Midlands, is certainly not something we come across very often as auctioneers and it's creating a lot of interest among potential buyers."
More information about the site is available on the SDL Property Auctions website.
