Half marathon runner to raise funds for local hedgehog rescue
By James Smith 26th Apr 2026
The Prickleback Urchin Hedgehog Rescue is set to benefit from the fundraising efforts of a local runner.
Anneka Sherratt is set to take on the Isle of Skye half marathon on June 13 in aid of the local sanctuary which she has supported for over five years.
Prickleback Urchins Hedgehog Rescue is a Rutland-based hedgehog rescue and rehabilitation centre that is entirely funded by donations.
Run by Rachel and Jay in their home in Market Overton, the rescue cares for an average of 125 hedgehogs a year from Rutland and the surrounding counties, working alongside local vets to ensure they have the best chance of survival.
Ahead of the half marathon, Anneka said: "I'm Anneka and I'll be running the Isle of Skye half marathon on 13 June 2026 to raise money for the wonderful Prickleback Urchin Hedgehog Rescue who work tirelessly and around the clock to rescue, rehabilitate and release hedgehogs in Rutland and the surrounding area.
"Wildlife and conservation is a cause very close to my heart.
"The United Kingdom is one of the most nature depleted countries in the world and our hedgehog population is severely declining and considered vulnerable to extinction.
"Hedgehogs face many dangers from our roads, destruction to their habitat, bonfires, poison to name just a few. Without our hedgehog rescues up and down the country, the numbers would be significantly lower than they already are.
"These little guys need all the help they can get.
"All funds raised will go towards supporting Prickleback Urchin Hedgehog Rescue in their vital work helping to protect these wonderful creatures. Any donation, no matter how small, will help make an impact."
