Read on to find out more about the history of the celebration and what events are going on locally for you to enjoy...

Valentine's Day is traditionally a Pagan festival celebrated in early February by lovers, who share gifts and greetings.

Valentine's Day was originally a Christian feast day honouring two early Christian martyrs named Saint Valentine.

It is said that, during the third century, Emperor Claudius II executed two men — both named Valentine — on February 14 but of different years. Their martyrdom was marked by the Catholic Church with the celebration of St. Valentine's Day.

However, the day has become a significant cultural, religious, and commercial celebration of romance and love in many regions of the world and is often represented by Cupid.

A range of local restaurants, shops and venues are hosting Valentine celebrations this year:

Warner's Traditional Sweet Shop are selling Valentine gift boxes, and you can even assemble the perfect box for your loved one from their pick and mix selection.

Ovation Wine & Spirit Bar are hosting three days of fondue from 14 - 16 February. Call the team on 07537 947574 to book.

Rutland Garden Village are celebrating Valentine's Day with a Tapas for Two deal at their Radish restaurant. Call 01572 770632 to book.

Rutland Hall Hotel & Spa will be serving a luxurious 3-course dinner tonight, and offering deals on hotel rooms.

Finally, Belvoir Castle are hosting a family-friendly Spectacle of Light event in the castle grounds. This will run until 19 February and you can book here.
