The hard work and dedication of Rutland Choral Society member Paul Butler has been recognised with the High Sheriff Award.

At the last event for Rutland Choral Society before their summer break, the High Sheriff of Rutland, Geoff Thompson, made a surprise presentation to Paul Butler of a High Sheriff Award, thanking him, on behalf of his local community, for sharing his musical talents through performance, accompaniment, organisation and providing support for individual.

This was received with an enthusiastic cheer and a standing ovation from everyone.

Geoff commented after the presentation: "There is no doubt that everyone who works with Paul has nothing but high praise for his musical abilities and his incredibly supportive personality. He is clearly loved and appreciated by all those around him."

Paul and Rita Butler moved to Oakham in 2010. Paul involved himself in a variety of community organisations and as a talented organist, pianist and singer he had no shortage of opportunities.

From 2011 he has helped as deputy organist at All Saints' Church in Oakham and has been playing there as holiday cover, for choir rehearsals and at a variety of special events.

The Revd Stephen Griffiths said: "Paul has made a great contribution to our musical life." He has given organ recitals at All Saints to raise money for charities and organised a series of on-line organ recitals during the Covid19 lockdown.

Since 2015, Paul has played the organ for services at various churches throughout the Oakham Benefice but mainly at Braunston and St Peter and St Paul church in Langham.

Margaret Foot, the choir director said: "Paul always works hard to produce something new each time. When he is playing, nobody moves, everyone listens to the end. The choir loves to work with him."

In 2014 Paul joined the All Saints Music Society and soon became heavily involved as musician, finder of artists, organiser of concerts, arranging organ recitals and generally supporting the administration of the society.

Paul has been the Rutland Choral Society accompanist since 2017, supporting the choir each week and running additional rehearsals, providing cover for the music director and running courses in music theory for the members.

Ann Blackett, on behalf of the Music Society and the Choral Society, said: "Paul is loved and respected by everyone in both the societies. He is so professional and talented yet unassuming."

Huge congratulations to Paul and the other dedicated members of Rutland Choral Society for their hard work and commitment.
