Whether you are a local history buff keen to harness your knowledge or a heritage newbie ready to learn, this is the perfect opportunity to learn more about old Oakham this weekend at Spring Day.

On Saturday 15th March, Oakham Town Council have organised a celebration of spring and all things Oakham with local businesses, craft stalls, children's activities and more.

Local artist and heritage buff Paul Wiggin, who illustrated The Story of Queen Edith, will be at Queen Edith's Manor in Oakham on Spring Day by the stocks to share his knowledge and give out a limited number of free souvenir hard-copies of his illustration.

Queen Edith has a fascinating and little-known history in Rutland. As the wife of Edward the confessor, Queen Edith was the richest woman in England in 1066 and her presence in the area can be seen across Oakham – which was called Occaham at the time.

At Spring Day this Saturday, there will be the opportunity to learn more about the history in Oakham, with free walking tours, live music in the castle and activities in Rutland County Museum, as well as local experts like Paul to talk to.
