Rutland residents who are passionate about green issues and protecting the environment are being invited to take part in the county's first ever 'climate conversation' on Wednesday 12 May 2021.

Climate change is affecting every country on every continent – disrupting national economies and threatening lives. The effects include changing weather patterns, rising sea levels and an increase in extreme weather events.

According to the United Nations, 2019 was the second warmest year on record and the end of the warmest decade (2010- 2019) ever recorded. Carbon dioxide (CO2) levels and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere also rose to new records in 2019.

Earlier this year, Rutland County Council declared a Climate Crisis for the county and underlined its commitment to supporting Rutland's response to what is a global emergency.

Having already formed a Biodiversity Task and Finish Group, to look at the sustainability of Rutland's natural environment, and taken steps to reduce its energy consumption, Rutland County Council has announced that it will be holding its first ever Climate Conversation in May. This will be open to residents and members of the public to join.

The event, which will be hosted by the Council's Climate Change Champion, Coun Lucy Stephenson, will take place as a virtual webinar.

Environment and climate experts, together with professionals from other related fields, will share their knowledge and experience with residents to support the Council and county in developing a network of community-led Climate Action Groups.

Coun Stephenson said: "There can be absolutely no doubt that climate change represents a grave threat to our way of life and the survival of many countries around the world. Experts agree saving lives and livelihoods requires urgent action to address the climate emergency, and we all have a part to play – including Rutland and its residents.

"We've made a start by looking at ways to promote greater biodiversity in Rutland and continue to look at how we, as a council, can reduce our carbon footprint. We know that lots of people around the county are keen to be involved and do their bit, which is why we're hosting this dedicated Climate Conversation – to bring people together and shape Rutland's collective response to the climate threat."

The Climate Conversation on Wednesday 12 May will take place in two parts:

1. A public webinar held via Zoom, with guest speakers giving presentations on a range of subject, including community land usage, sustainable farming, river habitats and food waste

Interactive discussion groups to continue the conversation, share views and ask questions

The Climate Conversation is open to anyone who lives or works in Rutland and would like to play an active role in supporting the county's response to climate change.
