A kitten has died after being savagely attacked by two dogs in Oakham yesterday (Thurs).

The family pet was playing in Braunston Road with his 11-month-old sister when they were ambushed.

"Two dogs attacked one cat while his sister Lottie ran up into a nearby tree," firefighter Matt Basey, of Oakham Fire Station, told Oakham Nub News today (Fri).

"Her brother was being driven to the vets by a neighbour when he died on the way in the car.

"The owner was not at home when the attack happened, she was at her wedding dress fitting for her marriage in October.

"She found out on a telephone call - from such a wonderful high her whole world must have come crashing down."

The owner's distressed mother-in-law drove to Oakham Fire Station early this morning to ask for help after Lottie had spent the night hiding in the tree.

Firefighter Basey added: "The cat was clearly petrified and efforts to coax her down with food had failed.

"She was about 30ft up the tree and, while firefighter Ant Smith climbed a ladder to rescue her, two other crew members held a salvage sheet to break her fall if she evaded capture.

"Ant sweet-talked Lottie for about 10 minutes before eventually coaxing her into a cat carrier and bringing her safely back to earth.

"She was clearly shaken but otherwise unscathed."

A Leicestershire Police spokesman told Oakham Nub News that officers are currently establishing the details of the incident with the owner.

"We have received a report this afternoon (28 Aug) that a cat was attacked by two dogs in Oakham yesterday.

"The incident is alleged to have happened at around 3pm on Thursday (27 Aug) in the area of Braunston Road.

"It was also reported that the cat has since died.

"Early enquiries are being made with the caller to establish further details around the incident," he added.
