Late Night Shopping in Oakham welcomes the crowds and sees Christmas Tree Festival winners crowned
Last night, Monday 11 December, Oakham welcomed back the annual Late Night Shopping event hosted by Carolyn Acton-Reed of Oakham & Rutland Events, and supported by Rutland County Council who allowed the roads to be closed for the highly-anticipated event.
Hundreds of residents flocked to the High Street, Mill Street and Oakham Market Place to indulge in festive treats and to get the last of their Christmas shopping done ahead of the holidays.
On top of the stalls and food ventures that set up in the streets of Oakham, local shops were open late and pubs hosted indoor stalls and a very busy Santa, who welcomed children to his grotto and made sure that Rutland's youth had their Christmas wish lists submitted in time for the big day.
Victoria Hall also hosted it's inaugural Christmas Tree Festival, which was judged by Oakham's Mayor, Sally-Anne Wadsworth.
The event at the community hub saw local businesses and charities sponsor a tree with the aim of raising funds for local causes and those in need.
The 'Best Dressed' tree award was given to Cooking Caterpillars, while the ultimate prize of the 'People's Choice' tree, voted for by the people of Rutland, was given to Oakham All Saints' Scout Group.
The Victoria Hall will be making a donation to the charity of each winners' choice.
The team at Victoria Hall, headed up by Chairman David Graham, said: "Thank you again to Cllr Sally-Anne Wadsworth from Oakham Town Council for coming to judge on the night.
"A huge congratulations to everyone who took part, and we look forward to next year!"
