A local dog rescue is looking for animal-lovers to adopt some of its residents.

Leicestershire & Rutland Stray Dog Sanctuary has been overrun with dogs as families and individuals abandon their pups on the run up to the summer holidays.

As such, they are looking for local people to offer some of their residents a long-term 'fur-ever' home.

The Leicestershire & Rutland Stray Dog Sanctuary was established nearly fifty years ago and has been run by the same family ever since.

Their aim has always been to find every dog a home and never put a healthy, well tempered dog to sleep - an ethos that is being threatened as more and more owners cannot handle their pets.

A spokesperson for the organisation said: "We always have stray and unwanted dogs, most with background history, who are all looking for good loving homes.

"We are very busy at the moment, trying to re-home many dogs that have been abandoned by their owners in the run up to the holiday season. Unfortunately this happens every year, but this time it seems worse than ever.

"If you think you can offer one of our dogs a second chance, then please come along to the sanctuary.

"If you have a dog that needs to be found a new home, we occasionally have space available and may be able to help – just give us a call.

If you think that you can help, call the team on 01664434220. You can call any day of the week before 5pm.

The Leicestershire & Rutland Stray Dog Sanctuary is a self funding organisation and donations of food and blankets are always much appreciated. Head to their Facebook page to find out more and follow the local team.
