An issue with a level crossing in Rutland this week left road users feeling cautious.

The level crossing in Ashwell remained up while a train came earlier this week.

While the lights at the crossing were red, warning of a train coming, the barriers failed to drop, leaving road users vulnerable as a train approached.

One Oakham Nub News reader reported that the train driver must have been aware of the issue, as the train approached "at walking pace", but others were furious that the issue had occurred, risking commuters and parents who were dropping their children at school.

A Network Rail spokesperson said: "Our teams were aware of an issue with the barriers at Ashwell level crossing on Wednesday 8 November and took proactive measures to keep motorists, passengers and train crews safe.

"The red road lights at the crossing continued to work to warn drivers of an approaching train and trains were slowed to a safe speed as they passed over the crossing.

"Safety is Network Rail's top priority. The barriers returned to normal shortly after."
