Following the successful launch of The Lions Club of Rutland Community Service Awards last year, the first two of four award presentations have recently been made for 2022/23.

Now the largest humanitarian service organisation in the world, Lions Club International was founded in 1917 by Melvin Jones, whose guiding principle was, "You won't get very far in this world until you start doing something for somebody else".

Rutland Lions have been running since 1975 and, having spent nearly 50 years "doing something for somebody else" are looking for assistance within the local community to relocate their shipping containers.

Now, they have welcomed 2023 with the hosting of their annual Community Service Awards, in which two local students have been recognised for their contributions to the community.

This prize is awarded to a student selected by their own school or college for their commitment to community service and contribution with the winner receiving a 'Community Service Award Certificate', a £50 prize plus £100 to donate to a charity of their choice.

Catmose College selected Polly Watchorn as their obvious choice for her contribution to the college and wider community. Polly commented that she felt mental health problems were currently affecting so many people and was very honoured to be able to help by donating her £100 to Peppers, the mental health charity in Oakham.

Harington School selected Jaskiran Kaur Bajwa as their community service winner. Jaskiran supports activity groups for children with learning difficulties and autism run by Melton Mencap, often providing one to one support. Jaskiran asked that her £100 go toward Melton Mencap with whom she works every Saturday and during half term breaks.

Congratulations to Polly and Jaskiran on their awards.
