A local father recently swapped his bed for a sleeping bag to raising funds for the Royal British Legion.

Steve Abbott, a loving father and husband and loyal supporter of local rugby, spent the night in his tent this March to raise money for the Royal British Legion alongside pal, 'Beechy'.

Oakham locals and long-time Rutland residents, Steve and Beechy took part in The Great Tommy Sleep Out, and the pair are still welcoming donations.

The Great Tommy Sleep Out, sponsored by BAE Systems, is a fundraising challenge designed to support the estimated 6,000 veterans that are experiencing homelessness in the UK right now.

You can sleep outside for one night or more, tent or no tent, at any time in March, and the charity ask that you attempt to raise at least £150. Well, the duo have already exceeded this target, and have already raised an estimated £1,200 between them.

The event is organised by the Royal British legion, and also supports 'Sleep-Outers' in making friends and connecting veterans. Image credit: Steve Abbott.

The pair kept warm with a fire and BBQ.

Steve said: "With every penny raised, Royal British Legion Industries can provide safe, warm housing and ensure everyone has a fair opportunity to gain employment, regardless of health conditions or disability.

"Please help me to raise much-needed funds for this incredible cause."

Steve's proud wife, Lisa, added: "No one should have to sleep rough especially those who put their lives on the line to protect ours.

"Please help Steve to raise as much money as possible for this amazing charity by clicking on the donate button."

You can find out more on Steve's Facebook fundraising page, and donate online. Donations will close on Sunday 7 April 2024.
