The Government have cracked down on the actions of domestic abusers in an attempt to further protect the victims of this crime.
Mrs Kearns said: "I welcome today's Government announcement setting out further protections for victims of domestic abuse."
These measures include:
- Tagging offenders on release
- Preventing prisoners contacting victims from inside prison
The Rutland and Melton MP added: "Domestic abuse victims show immense strength and bravery in coming forward, and it is vital that we do all we can to better protect them from further harm and help rebuild their lives.
"Tougher measures to monitor and track those who may go on to commit domestic abuse after they are released from prison will help ensure we crack down on violence against women and girls, and make sure they feel safe living in our communities."
Domestic Abuse takes place where the victim and perpetrator(s) are aged 16 or over and are "personally connected" to each other. It does not matter whether the behaviour consists of a single incident or a course of conduct.
Domestic Abuse consists of any of the following:
- Physical abuse
- Sexual abuse
- Violent or threatening behaviour
- Controlling or coercive behaviour
- Economic abuse
- Psychological, emotional or other abuse
According to the National Centre for Domestic Abuse, 1 in 5 adults experience domestic abuse.
If you have experienced domestic abuse, call the NCDA helpline 08009702070 or text NCDV to 60777.
