Oakham Co-operative Fitness could be coming soon to Oakham.

A self-sustaining, community, exercise co-operative for Oakham and the surrounding area, Oakham Co-operative Fitness will "prioritise creating a community with healthy minds and bodies".

Following the announcement that Catmose Sports Centre will close on 31 May, a group of local fitness enthusiasts have come together with the intention of launching a member-owned fitness space in Rutland's county town.

The team took to social media to update the public on their plans and progress so far: "We've had a busy week pitching our idea for a member-owned co-operative fitness space for Oakham. We've got a business plan, potential premises and a plan to make this real.

"What we are aiming to create is something self-sustaining that will offer group fitness classes with the same kind of inclusive, friendly and social atmosphere that makes Catmose amazing. While we sadly can't offer a sports courts or holiday childcare on our budget, we will continue campaigning to keep access to Catmose for the community to use the sports hall facilities.

"If we can get this off the ground, would you be interested in joining our co-operative fitness space? In order to help us pitch the model more effectively we would benefit from having a sense of likely membership numbers. If you are interested in becoming a member please join our mailing list to express your interest in joining us on this exciting journey."

Follow the link to the Oakham Co-operative Fitness website www.oakham.fitness and hit sign up to fill in the form and join the group.

The group aims to:

  • provide fun, motivating, empowering and high quality fitness classes that are affordable and fairly priced
  • help build, support and maintain healthy bodies and minds for our members
  • build an inclusive, supportive, affordable fitness culture for Oakham and the surrounding areas through group exercise classes and other means
