A man charged with assaulting three women in Oakham, including in an incident at the county council offices, has appeared in court this week.

Benedict Azam, 34, of no fixed address appeared at Leicestershire Magistrates' Court on Thursday 22nd August charged with three counts of sexual assault.

Leicestershire Police said in a statement: "A man has been charged with three counts of sexual assault following three reports made earlier this week.

"On Sunday evening (August 17), a woman reported that a man had approached her and touched her inappropriately. The incident was reported to have happened on Burley Road, Oakham, at around 8.30pm.

"A second report was made at 12pm on Monday (August 18) in Catmose Street, Oakham. A woman was reported to have been approached and touched inappropriately.

"Shortly after, a third report was made. At 12.10pm, a third woman was reported to have been approached and touched inappropriately in High Street, Oakham.

"Police arrived at the area and an arrest was made.

"Benedict Azam, 34, of no fixed address, has been charged with three counts of sexual assault in connection with the reports. He appeared at Leicester Magistrates' Court on August 20 where he has been further remanded into custody."

Azam did not enter a plea and will next appear at Leicester Crown Court on October 6.

It is understood the 12pm Monday assault was at the council's headquarters. The authority closed the building this week and had a message on its website to say this was due to 'unforeseen circumstances' and that customers would need to get in touch via phone.

The offices will reopen on Tuesday.

The council has been contacted for comment.
