Memorial bench damaged after car became stuck in mud at Egleton

A memorial seat in a cemetery was damaged after a car became stuck in mud and was used to help them get out.

Leicestershire Police report the incident happened in Church Road, Egleton, a week ago.

The bench, which was bolted to the ground, had been pulled from the ground and was later found left nearby.

The incident is believed to have happened sometime between 5pm on Wednesday February 26 and 8am on Thursday February 27.

Victoria George, clerk to the Egleton Parish Meeting, told Oakham Nub News: "On Wednesday night a Volkswagen car drove into a field on the road to Hambleton and got stuck in the mud.

"The occupants looking for something to give traction for their car entered the Churchyard and wrenched a memorial seat from its mountings and carried parts of it it down the lane to their car. The seat is not repairable. On leaving the field they also damaged the metal gatepost."

Leicestershire Police have said anyone with any information should contact them on 101 quoting incident 20*112770.
