A new campaign has been launched in Oakham to improve the county town of Rutland.

Oakham Cares, a scheme to encourage Oakham residents to get involved in caring for their town, is being run by local people for local people.

Participants with the group will pick litter, remove weeds and clean dirty signage, among other tasks that will improve the traditional market town and surrounding areas.

Last year, Oakham Nub News shared an opinion piece from an Oakham residents who shared her feelings that 'Oakham needs a spring clean'.

It appears that some in the market town still feel this way, and have decided to come together to work on the key issues, giving as little a few minutes a month to do their bit.

The goal of Oakham Cares is to get everyone in Oakham to commit to spending five or ten minutes each month cleaning up their community.

"We don't need a committee, we don't need a press officer, we don't need money, just five minutes of time," said the campaign organiser. "Imagine how smart our town could be if everyone did one little five minute job once a month."

As well as committing those five or ten minutes litter picking or cleaning or tidying their paths, residents can also report damaged signage and other issues to Rutland County Council, using their website or FixMyStreet.

They can also join Oakham in Bloom, a local group who organise community gardening projects.

The Oakham Cares campaign has a Facebook page and group where residents can post before and after photos of their work. The page is also a great way to see the progress that is being made and to get inspired to join the cause in whatever capacity you are able.

Alternatively, find out more on YouTube:

All that's needed is five or ten minutes of your time a month. A small commitment can make a big difference.

This scheme shows, once again, that Rutland is indeed living up to its motto, 'Multum in Parvo', meaning much in little.
