Police and Crime Commissioner Rupert Matthews has secured funding worth more than £400k to boost the home security of victims of crime and high-level anti-social behaviour across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.

As part of his commitment to protect and support victims and witnesses of crime, the PCC successfully bid for funding from the Ministry of Justice (MOJ) to deliver a whole package of improved services to help people in the aftermath of crime.

Victims of domestic abuse, anti-social behaviour and other high-impact crimes will now benefit from a free home security service over the next two years.

The PCC is inviting providers to tender for the contract which will launch on 1 January 2024 and is worth £103,500 per annum for the next two years. The successful provider will have the opportunity to apply for a two-year extension, bringing the total potential value of the project to £414,000.

Mr Matthews said: ""I want to help people recover from being a victim of crime as quickly as possible by helping them cope with everyday life again. This is what every citizen deserves.

"Becoming a victim or witness of crime can be life changing. The emotional and physical effects can last many years and prevent people from enjoying their lives as confidently as they should.

"I know that high-quality home security provides peace of mind which is crucial for reducing fear and anxiety. Looking after the victims of crime is a key part of my Police and Crime Plan, and this shows that I am delivering on that promise.

The new scheme will receive referrals exclusively from the victim support services already funded by the Commissioner. This includes his flagship Victim First service and those provided by domestic abuse and sexual violence support partners.

It will see trusted professionals visiting victims' properties to deliver a home security assessment to identify security concerns around the home, garden and boundary of the property. They will also provide and fit products designed to enhance security at the property.

Victims will benefit from crime prevention advice and the installation of a variety of security devices from door alarms and timer switches to door chains and window or door locks. Depending on need they may also receive wi-fi products such as video doorbells and outdoor lighting.

The delivery of victims' services is a key priority in the PCC's Police and Crime Plan and Mr Matthews has pledged to ensure victims are provided with exemplary support at a time of crisis. He has also committed to the development of a partnership response to reduce the harm and risks of domestic abuse, child abuse and exploitation.
