New St John Ambulance Cadet unit opens in Oakham
A new programme for young people is launching in Oakham, the county town of Rutland.
St John Ambulance has launched a new Cadet unit in Oakham.
Life saving skills are at the heart of the Cadet programme. There is also the opportunity to use these first aid skills by supporting our adult volunteers at events.
Cadets are given the opportunity to work towards their Grand Prior's Award. As part of the Award, you will be able to take part in a wide range of activities.
For the brand new Oakham branch, the next two Thursdays, 28 September and 5 October, are open evenings, where young people aged 12 to 16 years can drop in to speak with volunteers and Cadets about the opportunities they can have as a Cadet.
These include:
- learning first aid and volunteering at events
- engaging in social action and helping your local community
- learning about health and wellbeing
- developing your confidence and communication skills through our Cadet leadership courses
- becoming a Peer Educator and helping to teach others first aid
- enjoying a wide range of adventurous activities on a residential summer camp
The group are also keen to meet any adults, or soon-to-be adults, who would be willing to give a couple of hours of their time each week to support the sessions going forward.
From 12 October, the group will meet on Thursday evenings from 6.30pm until 8pm at The Odd House, 1 Station Road, Oakham LE15 6QT.
On 12 October 2023, as part of our events for Restart A Heart Day the session is open to anyone of any age to learn a few simple life-saving steps which could make a huge difference to someone in need of emergency first aid.
